Shane Geoghegan

I have been struggling to write about this since last week. I’m not a good writer at the best of times. When I get angry i find it particularly hard to express myself coherently, without ranting.

Shane Geoghegan was a 28 year old fitter who played rugby for Garryowen 3rds in Limerick. On a Saturday he had played a game and than spent the evening in a friend’s house watching the Ireland Canada international on tv. On his walk home that night he was ambushed by a masked man. Shane was shot four times in the back and once in the head as he tried to get away. He was executed. By mistake. He was killed by a murdering scumbag who had orders from a drug gang leading scumbag to kill a member of another other scumbag gang.

It’s obviously not been a good thing, that there has been any shootings in the city over the last 6/7 years but I and most of my peers at home drew some consolation in the fact that it was criminals killing criminals(with the notable exception of Brian Fitzgerald).

How much more are the people going to take? I don’t want the usual bullshit speeches from Cowen and Willie O’Dea about lines being crossed and resources. It’s 2 weeks later and what has happened?

I want action. Now.

I want an anti-gangs unit set up.

I want laws enacted to enable use of electronic surveillance.

I want doors being kicked down and criminals harassed. I want the guards to make these guys lives miserable.

I want harsh mandatory sentences for violent & drug-related crimes.

I want criminals to be treated like criminals when they are in prison. I can’t afford sky sports, why the fuck are my taxes paying for their sky sports?

I want the government to grow a pair of balls and make this happen.

I want more people to get angry.
