World Cup 90

April 4, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Don’t want to go on and on about the show but….

Everyone loves Reeling In The Years from the 60’s and 70’s, they are great for putting images to stories we have all heard.but it’s only really when you watch the late 80’s and 90’s that depict the events you can remember living through that you realise how good it really is.  The memories it brings back. I watched the 1990 episode and I got a lump in my throat during the clip below.

I remember Euro ‘88 well, Ireland had plenty of support than. Beating England didn’t hurt. But the level of public support in 1990 was unprecedented. The country just stopped when there was a game on. Completely stopped.

To any Irish person old enough to remember the tournament, Timotei is not a shampoo, he’s a dickhead.

The nation holds it’s breath…

And of course any thought of World Cup ‘90 is framed by Pavarotti and Nessun Dorma. A legend.

Another reason why I hate Super-14 rugby

March 13, 2009 · Leave a Comment

As well as all saffers, kiwis and aussies all being wankers, the quality of rugby being crap and no opportunities to see some of the best players in the world week-in, week-out; there is also the blatant sexism in SH rugby. It’s appalling.

Nathan Fillion

So Nathan Fillion has a new series starting this week called the castle.

Everything I have seen this guy in, he’s been great. Will definitely be checking this out. It’s about a Horror/Crime writer who starts helping the cops to solve crimes.

Latest Interview:

Castle’s Nathan Fillion on his new role: “He’s a douche.”

Good and Bad Movie News

March 5, 2009 · Leave a Comment

The trailer for Michael Mann’s latest movie hit the web over the last 12 hours.

Public Enemies starring Johnny Depp, Christian Bale and Marion Cotillard, looks like it could be a major return to form for Mann after the execrable Miami Vice.

It’s a Depression Era tale about infamous bank robber John Dillinger(Depp) and the FBI agent(Bale) tasked with taking him down.

In some depressing news, Spielberg is remaking Old Boy with Will Smith in the main role.

For anyone not familiar with the original, it’s a korean revenge thriller about a dude kidnapped and locked up for 15 years without explanation. Upon release he tries to figure out the identity and motive of his kidnapper.

Greatest Cast Ever?

March 2, 2009 · Leave a Comment

expendables1

In what looks like the greatest action movie cast ever essembled, Mickey Rourke has joined Stallone, Jet Li, Jason Statham, Dolph Lundgren, Randy Couture, Forrest Whittaker and Danny Trejo in the Expendables. Stallone is directing this old-school, bullets, martial arts, explosions and quips actioner about a crack team sent to South America to take out a dictator. Glorious.
And apparently the Governor of California will be making a cameo appearance as Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Great news for any 80’s/90’s action fans.

Pure Leginds!

November 20, 2008 · 1 Comment

Another year, another unforgettable match in Thomond Park.

The more things change etc. etc.

It was the most engrossing game of rugby i have seen this season. The “2nd string” Munster team tore into them from the off. They obviously hadn’t been told that they were 15-1 to win.

Warwick was brilliant in directing proceedings. A couple of missed McDonald kicks helped. The heart and belief shown by the young lads in the pack, some of them 3rd choice in their position, the leadership of Mick O’Driscoll, all vital. Stringer showing that while he may have been usurped for the Irish and Munster number 9 jerseys, he is far from over the hill. Rua and Lifemi had a typical rowdy performance in midfield. Dougie unfortunately was far from his vintage self.

Pride overwhelmed disappointment. I know the whole “Irish by birth, Munster by the grace of god” is a cliché at this stage, but i really couldn’t imagine, nor would want to be from anywhere else. Or support any other team. When the four boys stepped forward  to do the Haka, it was special. To borrow someone else’s words “goosebump inducing stuff!”

It’s nights like that, cause me to think about going home. I know I’ve missed a hell of a night out in Limerick.

Surely this game is the end of the discussion on whether to bring back mid-week games onto the tours?

Shane Geoghegan

November 19, 2008 · Leave a Comment

I have been struggling to write about this since last week. I’m not a good writer at the best of times. When I get angry i find it particularly hard to express myself coherently, without ranting.

Shane Geoghegan was a 28 year old fitter who played rugby for Garryowen 3rds in Limerick. On a Saturday he had played a game and than spent the evening in a friend’s house watching the Ireland Canada international on tv. On his walk home that night he was ambushed by a masked man. Shane was shot four times in the back and once in the head as he tried to get away. He was executed. By mistake. He was killed by a murdering scumbag who had orders from a drug gang leading scumbag to kill a member of another other scumbag gang.

It’s obviously not been a good thing, that there has been any shootings in the city over the last 6/7 years but I and most of my peers at home drew some consolation in the fact that it was criminals killing criminals(with the notable exception of Brian Fitzgerald).

How much more are the people going to take? I don’t want the usual bullshit speeches from Cowen and Willie O’Dea about lines being crossed and resources. It’s 2 weeks later and what has happened?

I want action. Now.

I want an anti-gangs unit set up.

I want laws enacted to enable use of electronic surveillance.

I want doors being kicked down and criminals harassed. I want the guards to make these guys lives miserable.

I want harsh mandatory sentences for violent & drug-related crimes.

I want criminals to be treated like criminals when they are in prison. I can’t afford sky sports, why the fuck are my taxes paying for their sky sports?

I want the government to grow a pair of balls and make this happen.

I want more people to get angry.

The Road

November 12, 2008 · 2 Comments

I would normally be worried about a book i love being “adapted” but there are reasons to be hopeful here.

1. John Hillcoat. The director of The Proposition(which to anyone who has not seen it, i urge you to go out and rent post-haste). If he can capture the post-apoclyptic landscape the way he captured Australia, he will be halfway to a great movie.

2. Casting. Viggo as the father, Robert Duvall, Guy Pearce and Charlize Theron. All excellant actors.

3. Cormac McCarthy is heavily involved.

Ireland Vs Tonga

October 30, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Was out in Paramatta Stadium on Monday evening for Ireland’s opening game of the RLWC.

Absolute cracker. Nobody expected much from the Irish(14 brits and an aussie) but they were in it until the end. Granted the tongans helped them with repeated free kicks but the Irish did well to cross the line 4 times.

Crowd of over 6,000 turned up, mostly Tongans. Bit surprised with all the Irish backpackers around, that there wasn’t a bigger Irish crowd. Probably a good thing actually, there was only 1 bar open.

Next up on Friday is Tonga Vs Samoa on Friday night. If Tonga win that, the Irish are out. We need the Samoans to win on Friday, and than beat them, by 3 points more than they beat Tonga, on Monday night.

Yes it’s a long shot.
